Ever watch your favorite artists and wonder, "Wow, how do they do that"? There is a certain "it" factor that we as artists and singers either poses naturally, or strive to attain. The vocal techniques I teach in my studio have been handed down from LA's top vocal coaches, but my instruction doesn’t stop there. Even the most experienced vocal coaches will only delve as deep as vocal technique. Without the emotion attached, we merely end up performing a set of tasks. What we forget is that stage performance is just as important as the vocal technique. After all, your body (the voice) and soul (the emotion) are connected naturally, so why not combine them together in a performance? In my opinion, the "it" factor broken down - is just good singing talent, combined with how well you can connect with an audience. Having said that, it will take some vulnerability on the part of the person who is learning. There must be a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. As my acting teacher used to say to me, "put your hand on the chopping block". Which means be vulnerable! Nothing is worth gaining without taking a risk!
